The Knowledge Broker & How to Speed up ERP Selections Tuesday, Aug 5 2008

Think about the following project to initiate. A company is to select a new software system; for example an Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP system.

Finding ERP suppliers is not that hard. Internet is a willing environment to organize this preliminary step in the selection process. Then (or before) you need some requirements and selection criteria. In the next step you should filter the initial group to a shortlist of high potentials.

Both in the initial long-list phase as in the next sequence with the short-list, you need to match your demand characteristics with those of the suppliers. The challenge pops up in asking the (right) questions - this is usually done in a Request for Information (RFI) or in a later stage the Request For Proposal (RFP). This is the challenge to set the questions up in a form that all participants understand the same format.

This is a knowledge management problem. You request information, but behind this information is a huge amount of knowledge hidden. Even if you ask the suppliers to draw some pictures you are not able to compare these. All picture, models and schemes are most of the time proprietary.

The solution…

The solution is to direct to an independent third party. This could be an independent advisor, not offering (software) solutions.

The external advisor is to prepare a format in which not only the most essential information is gathered (from the suppliers), but also the essential (explicit) knowledge behind it.
The demanding company could still setup its own requirements. The management advisor — in the role of knowledge broker — is to translate these requirements to a universal (not proprietary) form and have the suppliers respond to it.

The Benefits…

  • objective and independent advice
  • scalable: the advice could be up to any level of detail
  • It takes care that all participants (including the initiating company) provide accurate information.
  • reducing time and (other) resources

Web Coach Tip: 3 Proven Steps to Increase Traffic to Your We Monday, Aug 4 2008

#1

Make sure your business card includes a persuasive “FREE Offer” inviting the recipient to visit your website. I used to think this idea was too “salesy.” That is, until I tried it myself. I exchanged a handful of cards at a networking function; in the next few days I noticed a significant increase of subscribers all from this event!

WOW!

People actually visited my site because of this one tiny tip? Yes, they did…because I gave them a REASON to visit.

Are you curious to know what my business card looks like?

The left half is bright yellow with a red-dashed border resembling a coupon so people are instantly drawn in and read it immediately.

It simply states: “What everybody should know before hiring a web designerdownload my FREE time-saving ‘Quick-Start Web’ Workbook with 9 Proven Techniques to help you get started”

#2

Write articles and become the “resident guru” by posting regularly in your target market’s newsgroups.

This isn’t about selling your product, but establishing yourself as an industry expert with a vast wealth of information to share.

This means you should be on the lookout for opportunities to respond to questions/postings to gain the respect of the community. Simply put, sit back, relax, be a fly on the wall and listen… wait for just the right opportunity to share your expertise.

Another trick with newsgroups is to offer to do “leg work” when someone asks a question and no one seems to know the answer. Post your own message stating that you would like to know the answer as well and that you’ll do your own research and get back to them soon.

When posting a message like this, you MUST follow through. Doing this will show everyone in a very public way that you are a resourceful “go to” person and thus increase traffic to your website when folks want to learn more from the expert!

#3

Each time you send an email or post to a news group or forums, use your signature to ask an intriguing question or offer something of value for free. How many times have we heard this? You would be surprised how many people still forget to use this opportunity to give folks a reason to visit their site. You will definitly find my f.r.e.e. offer in my signature file.

Now it’s your turn…what else can you do to increase traffic? Offline? Online?

Five Snake Care Tips for Beginners Thursday, Jul 31 2008

If you’re looking for an unusual, eye-catching pet, it’s hard to go wrong with a snake. They’re exotic enough to catch people’s interest, yet hardy enough to require minimal care. Nevertheless, uninformed first-time owners tend to make some basic mistakes, some of which can be quite costly. Here are some simple tips that can help ensure the health of the snake and prevent a lot of aggravation as well.

1. First, take note of how large your snake can grow to be. Most North American varieties only grown to be about four feet long, which is a reasonable size. Don’t let a pet store employee talk you into buying a Burmese python, since these critters can grow to be over thirty feet long, and will require huge cages and tremendous amounts of food. (And before you ask… No, most zoos will not accept these as donations.)

2. Don’t scrimp on cage size. A cage that is too small can be very stressful and unhealthy to your pet. Pet store clerks will sometimes try to sell you caging that is inadequate in size, so don’t fall into this trap. For adequate comfort, the combined length and width of the cage should at least match the snake’s length. Snakes can grow fairly quickly, so don’t forget to take that into account as well!

3. Do find out how docile that particular specimen is. Most non-venomous North American snakes are fairly docile, but if you’re a first-time keeper, you should probably make sure that your prospective pet can be handled easily.

4. Make sure that you select a pet with a hearty appetite. Ball pythons, for example, make great petsbut they are notoriously finicky eaters. Corn snakes make great starter pets because they are exceedingly docile and aren’t picky about what they eat.

5. Snakesindeed, any reptilecan potentially spread salmonella. The risk involved is very small, but one should still play safe. This is especially true when young children or people with compromised immune systems are involved. Do read up on reptile hygiene and salmonella before purchasing your pet.

Obviously, these tips only constitute some basic advice. I recommend that all prospective owners should read up on snake care in general, as well as the specific needs of the species that they plan to purchase. A little bit of basic research can prevent a great deal of aggravation in the future.

Internet Marketing Sense: 8 Lessons a Classic Board Game Can Teach You About Running Your Online Bus Thursday, Jul 31 2008

Have you ever played Monopoly? This classic board game is based on the acquisition of wealth through buying, renting, and trading real estate property using play money.

Have a go at it, and you’ll be surprised how much it can teach you about running a successful business online. I discovered eight helpful pointers for you to start with.

Let’s get started…GO!

Everybody begins on a level plain. You get the choice of token to mark your place on the board. Usually I pick either the wheelbarrow, terrier, or ship. Not a surprise if you know that I enjoy gardening, dogs, and the sea.

Whether it’s based on aesthetic appeal or affinity for what is being represented, your personal choice is one initial triumph; an essential 1st step into the game!

Lesson #1 Start With Something You Like

This simple technique creates a winning combination for your business. You have firsthand knowledge and experience in a niche that fascinates you, and you impart this with so much excitement that you’re audience can’t help feeling the same!

Interesting people are people who are interested, as the saying goes. Furthermore, your passion for the subject will drive and motivate you through the daily routine of running and growing your business.

With the roll of the dice, the race begins! Whether or not you have an idea on how to proceed, your biggest challenge will involve skill and a bit of luck.

Lesson #2 A Little Luck Never Hurt Anyone

With the dice, many say it’s in the wrist. But whichever way you put it, everybody could use a bit of it every now and then. Some are luckier than others, landing on squares of opportunity and free cash. Others land on rent after bill.

It’s not altogether different in internet marketing. I’ve landed on losing squares because I didn’t use my head. And sometimes I happen to sign up for a newsletter just when they launch a pre-release discount for a product I just happened to need at the time.

Lesson #3 Lay Out Your Game Plan

You can tackle this game in many different ways, but you need to establish a game plan. If you’re the independent type, you might want to learn from scratch by playing around with ideas. All systematically, of course.

Focus on the small groups and move up from there, luck with the dice notwithstanding. Or make a beeline for prime properties and keep building houses and hotels for long-term profit.

You can choose any number of combinations with which to proceed and have a go with it, but be prepared to play many times over! It is the only way you’ll know what works for sure.

And sometimes, the smarter way to go is by asking someone who has played the game and always come out on top. You will still have to play it yourself, of course, to make little improvements until it works right for you.

No matter how you develop your game plan, be sure to follow it through. Persistently. Consistently. Systematically. Don’t get easily distracted if something new happens to land on your lap. If it’s consistent with your plan, you’ve struck on luck!

The same goes for running your business. You can save yourself plenty of time and heartache by adapting proven methods from those already successful before you. They’ve been around the block enough times to know what works and what doesn’t. All the same, blend in your own personal twist until it works for you.

Lesson #4 You Gotta Spend Money to Make Money

What do you do once you land on an opportunity square…pass? I would be hard-pressed to name anyone who hops around the board without buying a single property!

Maybe the first few rounds won’t be as rough since the game has just begun. Nobody has yet put up houses or expensive hotels on their properties. Rents are not yet so high. Maybe you’ll get lucky on the Community Chest or Chance cards. And you’ll even make it to GO. That’s another $4000 in the bag. With time, however, you’ll find your wallet empty as you hop from house to hotel.

At this point, you might begin to regret all the passed opportunities you let slip through your fingers. Monopoly is about investment and return! Lest you forget, your wallet will remain empty.

In online business, a free ride is alright. Many people have started out this way. But bear in mind that your business will need prime web real estate and a marker (www.yourbusiness.com) to go with it, if you’re at all to be taken seriously. Else your credibility, image, or reputation will suffer before you have the chance to even build it.

You don’t have to spend on everything right away. Just the essential tools that your market sees: website, autoresponder messages, list management, etc.

Lesson #5 Jail Time Does Not Pay

Other players get ahead and beat you to the prime squares. You’ll waste what little resources you have, trying to get out.

The internet is no different. While nothing compares to learning your lessons the hard way, you’d be much better off learning from other people’s mistakes. At such a critical stage when you’re just starting out, your reputation cannot easily be repaired once shattered, whether by SPAM or other unethical business practice. Establish a code of ethics and faithfully stand by it!

Lesson #6 Give Back to the Community

The Community Chest card usually collects donations, taxes, and other related fees to keep the monopoly community (a.k.a. the Bank) intact and progressive.

The internet community requires no different. While you do have bills to pay — we all need to make a living! — the mechanics of buying and selling exists as a well-oiled machine because of the interaction and exchange of information without constant thought for personal profit.

Go pro bono once in a while. Help for the sake of helping. Answer questions and offer practical advice in the forums and discussion groups. Write articles offering valuable information from your own knowledge and experience. How about some free products?

Lesson #7 There’s Always a Chance to Start Over: Pass GO, and Collect $$$

GO is a place of refuge. Passing it always comes with a sigh of relief! An excellent time to examine property cards and glance at the status on the board. Assess your progress. Make necessary adjustments in your plan: acquire properties to prevent others’ monopoly or add to yours?

Going back to square one is also ideal in internet marketing. It is an opportunity for you to re-group. Assess your progress, based on your plan. Are you keeping your time-schedule? Are you accomplishing the tasks you’ve set out to do?

Where does your business stand at this point in time? Step back for a moment and look at the big picture. You can then make the necessary improvements. You can also modify your game plan for better results.

Lesson #8 Your Attitude Makes Your Game

How do you deal with bad luck on the dice, when you’re constantly landing on properties that demand staggering prices for rent? Do you resign before you even try to get back up? Or do you give yourself that little pep-talk and play on?

What is your business attitude? It’s important to make a stand. How you choose to deal with the demands of your business and its problems, determines your chances for success.

Even in its varying degrees, success ultimately lies with you. It is in your hands. If that is what you want, you have little choice but to develop the attitude for running a successful business.

Identify your capabilities and compensate for your weaknesses by improving on your strengths. And always, always always…adapt accordingly!

The stakes are high. And your only opponent in the end, is yourself. What’s your game plan?

Go ahead. Roll the dice. Opportunities await. And GO is never far from sight.

Women’s Mental Health Wednesday, Jul 30 2008

Does so-called “positive thinking” have any real effect on a woman’s mental health and physical health? Can a change in your thinking actually change your health? The answer is yes, according to a scientific study at the University of Pennsylvania.

The study found that those who responded optimistically to adversity lived longer those who responded pessimistically to adversity.

Adversity and stress visit us all on a regular basis. A quick test of your own current state of optimism is the reaction you have when reading the above paragraphs. Some people gain hope and confidence from the news. Others feel helpless and shake their heads while muttering something negative. We all see both reactions in life and unfortunately the negative thinking seems to be more common.

Parade magazine reports that in a recent survey, 250,000 women said the number one problem they face every day is stress. One way to face stressful challenges and overcome them is to think optimistic thoughts about how you plan to rise above the situation and solve the problem. Imagine yourself victorious.

Some women say “But I don’t have any imagination.” Sure you do. Every time you worry about something that doesn’t happen you have imagined the worst. You are using your imagination to visualize your worries. Use this same process but imagine the best and visualize things going right instead of things going wrong.

As You Think, So Shall You Become

Author James Allen wrote the following poetic advice over 100 years ago:

“Strong, pure and happy thoughts build up the body in vigor and grace. The body is a delicate and pliable instrument, which responds readily to the thoughts by which it is impressed, and habits of thought will produce their own effects, good or bad, upon it.

Thought is the fount of action, life and manifestations; make the fountain pure, and all will be pure.

If you would perfect your body, guard your mind. If you would renew your body, beautify your mind.

As you cannot have a sweet and wholesome home unless you admit the air and sunshine freely into your rooms, so a strong body and a bright, happy, or serene face can only result from the free admittance into the mind of thoughts of joy and good will and serenity.

There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body; there is no comforter to compare with good will for dispersing the shadows of grief and sorrow. To live continually in thoughts of ill will, cynicism, suspicion, and envy, is to be confined in a self-made prison. But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, to patiently learn to find the good in all –such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of heaven; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor.”

What makes a healthy personality? According to Emerson, “An individual has a healthy personality to the exact degree to which they have the propensity to look for the good in every situation.”

Try that for one day. Look for the good in every situation. Find the silver lining in every cloud. See if you don’t have a better day than usual.

When you meet up with someone who is thinking negative, remember this little joke and smile: When a grouch was given this advice he said, “I was going to try positive thinking once… but then I figured what the heck is the use in trying.”

Look for the good in every situation today and keep smiling.

Monica Nelson writes optimistically about womens health questions, including how omega-3 fish oil can improve mood, and why whole house water filters may help make it easier to lose weight and have more healthy skin and hair.

Divorce and Alimony Formula Monday, Jul 28 2008

In divorce, a common question is, “what is the alimony formula”. Well, there really is no set alimony formula for divorce. This is in complete contrast to child support, which is decided based upon a specific formula in each state. Alimony is based on factors and those factors are decided through divorce negotiation or by a divorce judge. But, there is no alimony formula available to your divorce attorney or you to determine in advance what alimony will be paid in your case.

What does a divorce court look at to determine alimony? Those issues do vary by state. But, there are also many alimony factors that are common from state to state. So, although there is no specific alimony formula for you to rely on, there are alimony factors that you can look at to help you determine what the alimony might be in your case.

In divorce, some of the alimony factors that a judge might look at include the following. First is the length of your marriage. If the parties have been married for one year, the court’s attitude towards a request for alimony will be very different than if the parties have been married for twenty years. Because the length of marriage varies so much in all divorces, it is not possible to plug this factor into an alimony forumla to determine the alimony amount.

Another factor affecting the award of alimony is employment status. Obviously, if the spouse seeking alimony has been unemployed or underemployed for a number of years to care for young children, the home, or the spouse, that is a factor that will militate in that spouse’s favor if he or she is seeking alimony. On the other hand, if that spouse has the ability to obtain employment that will more than adequately meet his or her needs, the court might think a little differently about awarding alimony to that party. Other factors that are considered closely with this factor include level of education, job experience, the age of children in the household, and work history.

A major factor that can affect an award of alimony is the amount of property to be retained or divided by the parties. If the spouse seeking alimony has been a stay at home parent, but will have signifcant assets after divorce or has separate assets, like a trust fund, the court’s attitude towards the award of alimony will be affected. The court will certainly view a request for alimony under these circumstances much different than a request made by an individual who is receiving no assets in the divorce or who does not have any separate property.

The health of the party seeking alimony is a major factor that can impact a court’s decision in awarding alimony. If the spouse seeking alimony has a debilitating physical condition that impacts whether or how much they can work, the court will not want to impoverish that party after divorce and the court will be more likely to use alimony to address at least basic living needs.

One other factor that should be considered by the divorce court and by the parties, is the taxability of the alimony payments. In most instances, if there is no specific provision to the contrary, spousal support payments are taxable to the recipient and tax deductible to the payor. The tax benefit obtained by spreading out economic wealth in this fashion can be significant and should be discussed in depth with your divorce attorney.

One issue that is not always considered by the court, but should be discussed with your divorce attorney, is that alimony payments are, in general, not dischargeable in bankruptcy. If there is any possibility that the party who is to pay alimony will be filing for bankruptcy, the divorce attorneys will negotiate very hard on both sides to maximize the final benefit to their client in divorce.

It should thus be apparent that in divorce, there can be no easy alimony forumla, no matter what state you live in. It is impossible to plug these and other factors into a mathematical equation to arrive at a “correct” alimony formula. It is necessary that the divorce court, or the divorce attorneys review how these varied and different factors affect both parties in the divorce and then arrive at a solution that encompasses all of the divorce issues, including property settlement and alimony. They cannot simply set up an alimony formula that would work for all parties.

U Won’t Face Disappointment and Frustration While Trying to Make Money Online If… Sunday, Jul 27 2008

I hear, read, and have often observed that `disappointment’ and `frustration’ are two very major issues with people trying to make money online by working at home. I think every team leader must be spending more time counseling their down line than any on any other kind of communication with them. I think this can be avoided.

Let’s first accept that anxiety is okay. When we are new in the business and are still learning the ropes, it is but natural to get impatient. Also since we are mostly learning on our own on the net, we are bound to get lost every now and then too. What we should make sure is that we should not let small irritations and anxieties take the form of frustrations etc. It will only delay our success as it will affect our mindset and consequently our work. Let’s keep these 5 practical points in mind:
It’s a fact that people are making amazing money on the net. It’s a fact. And a FAct is a FACt is a FACT. Know what I mean? It’s the single most practical, no-nonsense- no frills attached motivating factor.

Success will take time to come. You start to work at home today and will start making money tomorrow is not true. You will make money online and make lots of it but it will take time. After 7-8 months of starting your site and working on it continuously, you will start making money. It will increase twofold or five, depending on your efforts and level of comfort and understanding of the internet and techniques.

Since all the learning has to be done online, on your own, it will require time and patience. You got to learn HTML and SEO. This is basically learning to design and promote your site. A self motivated individual will do much better than someone who needs to be pushed.

Unless we have a perfect understanding of a program or technique and how it will exactly make a difference to our website/work at home business, we should not buy software’s that promise to automate the business or move us up in the Search Engines. Spending too much money on such things and not getting what we want or have assumed we will get, will add to frustration. The people selling those software’s must not be making tall promises but what you have to understand is that “Are you knowledge-wise ready to understand what they are trying to teach?” Get your basics in place. Try to work on your website manually as far as possible. It will make you thorough. Once you know about various facets and are making some money, re-invest and increase your income.

The last point is same as point No.1. Never forget that amazing money making is going on, on the internet. People from all walks of life, from all over the world are engaging in work at home business in tens and thousands. I repeat “It’s the single biggest motivator to keep you going. Every time I interact with successful online entrepreneurs, their enthusiasm and matter of fact-ly approach rubs on me. That is the reason I am making money online and so will you, take the first step of starting to work at home with all the above points in mind.

Low Blood Pressure - Why is Your Blood Pressure Low? Thursday, Jul 24 2008

Why is your blood pressure low?

As a doctor with an interest in the subject, I’m often asked if a low blood pressure is normal or if such a reading indicates some abnormal process in the body? In fact - it can be difficult to precisely define what we mean by low blood pressure. It all really depends on what’s normal for you as an individual.

If 1000 people had their blood pressure measured then we might expect to find a spread of readings. These might range from as high as 200 / 120 down to 80 / 50 with most people clustering around a level of around 130 / 85. Most of these people would have no symptoms of any kind - no matter what their blood pressure reading actually was. Even those with obviously low blood pressure would be free of any symptoms in most cases.

The answer to whether it is normal or abnormal to have a low blood pressure depends on what your own typical or average blood pressure reading is.

Here’s an example of when it’s normal to have low blood pressure.

If, for the whole of your life, you’ve always had blood pressure readings of around 90 / 50 - then without doubt you have “low blood pressure” but there is truly nothing wrong with you or with your blood pressure reading. You should be pleased that your risk of stroke or heart attack will be much less than many others. You’re not likely to experience any symptoms from your “low blood pressure.” Putting it simply - your blood pressure is normal for you and needs no investigation or treatment. This kind of “normal low blood pressure” will not cause you any symptoms and will need no treatment. It’s just part of you and how your system works.

So, when might low blood pressure be an abnormal finding?

If your blood pressure is usually around 130 / 80 and suddenly or gradually drops to a level around 90 / 50 then it’s very likely that you’ll become aware of symptoms related to this change. As in the above example you have “low blood pressure” but in this instance it is not normal for you to have readings this low. You may need to see your doctor for tests because it’s quite likely that some other disease or perhaps a medication has caused your blood pressure to drop. Someone who develops low blood pressure like this will often experience symptoms such as those listed below.

The symptoms of an abnormally low blood pressure can include:

Feeling light headed, feeling dizzy, being tired or feeling fatigue on exertion, fainting, transient blurring of vision, or transient confusion. All of these low blood pressure symptoms will resolve if the blood pressure returns to normal.

The following are among the many possible causes of low blood pressure when it is abnormally low:

Medications for anxiety, medications for blood pressure, heart medications, diuretics or “water tablets” and some anti-depressant medications. Other medication related causes are painkillers and alcohol - particularly if these two are mixed together!

Non medication causes of include dehydration, heart disease and heart valve disease, recent heart attack, changes in heart rhythm, bacterial infection in the system, kidney diseases, diabetes mellitus and haemorrhage or bleeding.

As you can see, the above list of the causes of low blood pressure is extensive and you should consult with your doctor if you are concerned in any way. Above all - don’t try to diagnose your own condition - seek help if you are worried. Low blood pressure is not likely to do you any serious harm but it can leave you feeling pretty miserable.

Dr Gordon Cameron is a doctor based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has a special interest in blood pressure treatment.
You can discover how to lower high blood pressure and about the problems of low blood pressure treatment by visiting Dr Cameron’s websites.

He has also written about using acupuncture for high blood pressure.

Reasons Why Home Based Businesses Fail Wednesday, Jul 23 2008

I was thinking about why home based businesses do not always find their successes. My thought here is not to say that home based businesses are not a good idea - I for one am engaged in a home based business. Instead, I was thinking about ways to help identify how to avoid failures in home based businesses. Can we actually insure success if we follow some logical first steps?

Three reasons tend to come to mind.

1. Expectations are set to high by a representative

2. Lack of Training, Education and Support by the company or representative.

3. Individual entering into the business is actually a “employee” not an “entrepreneur”.

The third one is probably more important than the other two. If you have never owned a business and have always relied upon someone else giving you a paycheck, then the transition to business owner can be difficult if you are not prepared. Having to “sell” your business product or service and realizing how much work has to be done upfront can be overwhelming at first.

No question, if you can overcome the initial obstacles and stay focused you will see rewards later. This becomes the second realization of owning your own business is the amount of time it takes before you start seeing the rewards.

Another big problem is marketing is communication. Most marketers online do not communicate with their affiliates, resellers and distributors. If you are having a hard time making any money online, try following these few rules:

1. Build your communication network

2. Utilize all your resources within your business

3. Build a marketing stronghold using #1 and #2.

Not everything is the individual though. Many companies have representatives that oversell their business. In most cases the representative is a “Loose Cannon” and is saying things against company policy. You have to do your research about the company, the business, the products. Contact the company directly to get your information. Talk to others (3 - 5) that are in the business and get the different perspectives too.

Once you understand the process of owning a business and you have done your research about the company, make sure you understand the support structure. Will be you be trained, educated and supported by the company and its existing members? Without a support structure it will be very difficult to gain success completely on your own.

If anyone has some other thoughts, please add them. I’m sure we can come up with more ways to set expectations and avoid failures.

Joy of Roadside Signs Tuesday, Jul 22 2008

Some folks save stamps, art glass or 1950 Chevys; but I cotton to roadside signs - particularly Mail Pouch barns and Burma Shave ditties.

My yard and bank account are much too small for the real things. However, my memory and computer files have ample capacity.

Back when two-lane highways and 50 MPH cars were the norm, motorists had time to enjoy the scenery.

Welcome diversions were Mail Pouch Barns to count, and Burma Shave signs to read.

Speed limits in the second quarter of the twentieth-century - my formative years — were leisurely. Free-standing “bill boards” were not yet cost effective for advertisers.

Bridging the advertising gap was the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Co. of Wheeling, W.Va.

Aaron and Samuel Bloch were grocers who also made cigars. They retrieved tobacco cuttings, flavored them with licorice and introduced it in 1884 as chewing tobacco.

They also had advertising instincts. They named and packaged their product in a soft container styled after the familiar and respected U.S. mail pouch.

As competition increased, the Bloch brothers in 1910 began painting their brand name and slogan in large letters on rural barns along well-traveled roads.

Farmers were a segment of consumers partial to chewing tobacco inasmuch as fire-lit tobacco was a hazard around barns.

Bloch “field agents” solicited advertising rights on strategic farm routes - mostly in the Midwest.

Farmers readily signed up in return for a choice of about $5 annually — depending upon location and bargaining skills — free tobacco, magazine subscriptions or a pocket watch.

After company reps had lined up a dozen or so barns in an area, two-man painting crews known as “wall dogs” moved in.

If the barns were close together, and in good repair, a crew could paint two signs a day.

The crew leader viewed the barn surface from the road to gauge the size of letters needed. These he lined in by eye and spotted with a dab of paint in the color desired.

His helper followed to lather on a thick mixture of white-lead paste thinned with linseed oil and gasoline and colored with appropriate dyes.

Painters earned from $50 to $125 a week. They furnished their own paint, brushes, ladders truck and lodging. They were assigned territories they could maintain.

At the peak of chewing tobacco use in 1930, Mail Pouch had 20,000 barns under contract and enjoyed 65 percent of the product market.

Under the impact of “eye pollution,” Congress in 1965 enacted the Highway Beautification Act. This banned all commercial signs within 660 feet of a federally funded highway.

Barns with Mail Pouch signs were classified as commercial advertisements. Many thousands were demolished. In their places are eyesore billboards readable from across a proscribed strip of featureless ground.

It is estimated that there are only 2,000 original Mail Pouch barns remaining - objects of pilgrimages by history buffs and photographers.

Smile While Driving

Another roadside advertiser, pre-billboard days, was Burma Shave. This was a soothing, pleasant smelling whisker lubricant that replaced shaving mugs, soap and brushes.

According to the Eisner Museum of Advertising and Design, the product began in 1925 as Burma-Vitae liniment. This allegedly was concocted by the father of Clinton Odell from a recipe sent by a sailor-friend in the Orient.

Clinton Odell was a lawyer at Minneapolis, Min. The liniment did not sell well so he asked a chemist friend, Carl Noren, to improve the patent medicine. His formula 143 turned the medicine into a slushy cream ideal for use with the new “safety razors.”

Odell’s sons, Leonard and Allan, set about selling the new product re-named Burma Shave. However, it also did not sell well.

Young Allan suggested they advertise with a series of small, related signs. He had seen them along a road while peddling the “brushless” shaving cream to drug stores.

Father Odell was skeptical but finally consented. In 1926, he gave his son $200 for lumber with which to build a dozen sets of signs for two roads into Minneapolis.

Allan hurried to install them before winter froze the ground. The first series-signs were straightforward:

Save Modern Way

Fine For The Skin

Druggists Have It

Burma Shave

Druggists sent rush-orders for the cream. On this basis, Clinton Odell sold 49 percent of the company’s stock to raise money for a sign shop.

Sites for series-signs along straight, country roads were rented from farmers. There had to be enough space between signs to allow easy reading at 50 miles per hour - then considered the top, safe speed.

Burma Shave expanded, and expanded again, to meet demand.

No one remembers who conceived the style of catchy witticisms. The earliest remembered was:

With In This Vale

Of Toil And Sin

Head Grows Bald

But Not Your Chin

Burma Shave

The resulting fervor over the roadside verses is considered the most successful advertising campaign of all time.

It was the right technique for the roads of that day. They continued popular until discontinued in 1963. By then, increased driving speeds and proliferation of out-door signage by others made Burma Shave verses less effective.

Prior to World War II, Burma Shave signs were cultural icons. People collected the verses. On family trips, my mother read them aloud to entertain father and we youngsters.

When the company’s advertising department ran out of ideas, it conducted a contest to obtain new verses. More than 50,000 entries were submitted.

The verses featured safe driving and romantic advice as well as whisker wisdom.

Odell was careful not to offend, but some of the romantic ones occasionally raised an eyebrow or two.

I still remember one that made Mother pause, Dad laugh, and we kids giggle:

Dinah Doesn’t

Treat Him Right

If He’d Shave

Dinah-might!

Burma Shave

The hidden meaning probably would have been missed if the exclamation point hadn’t made it explicit.

One year the American countryside was flooded for a year with this series:

Free Offer

Rip A Fender

Off Your Car

Mail It In

Win A Jar

Burma Shave.

To the company’s surprise, it was flooded with fenders scavenged from junkyards and toys. However, Odell was pleased to pay off.

Odell took great pride in the commendations he received from highway safety officials for Burma Shave safety tips like this:

Past Schools

Take It Slow

Let The Little

Shavers Grow

Burma Shave

The sale of shaving cream, of course was the primary objective. Whisker witticisms dominated the verses:

Whale Put Jonah

Down The Hatch

Coughed Him Up

Cause He Scratched

Burma Shave

No one knows how many different verses were put on sign sets - one collector has catalogued 600.

Certainly this is only a fraction of the 60-year history of the campaign. My own collection consists of about 150.

At the peak, there were 35,000 Burma Shave signs throughout the United States.

After World War II, electric razors became popular. Highway speeds increased to the point that leased space for wider-spaced signs was prohibitive and distracting.

The signs were taken down in 1963. Sales of Burma Shave plummeted and the product was discontinued.

The company was sold to the American Safety Razor Company in 1997. It reintroduced the wonderful shaving cream for old-timers who still like to shave with it and recall favorite Burma Shave sallies.

Sorry, aficionados, I use electric.
