Wait Your Turn Friday, Jul 31 2009

At live poker online tables, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement, or sometimes a little bored. When players lose focus, they also make mistakes. Acting out of turn is not only poor form, but it can cost you the pot at the casino online. During a televised tournament, it was down to heads-up, and neither player had connected with the board, which had two 10s plus rags. One online poker player had a pocket Ace, and that was the best hand. The other player had two face cards. The Ace had been betting and getting called by the inferior hand right through the river. When the river came out a rag, with the pocket Ace still the best hand, the player holding it made a fatal mistake. Although he was second to act, he immediately checked when the river came out. By acting out of turn, he gave his opponent valuable information.

His opponent, with an inferior hand, looked at him as if to ask, “why did you do that?” and the Ace realized his blunder, getting a little flustered. The other player immediately put out a big bet, daring the better hand to call with a paired board and raggy cards on display. The player with the Ace folder, losing a pot that should have been his with best hand.

Always think before you do anything at the table. Acting out of turn can cost you a win.

The Importance of Stealing Wednesday, Jun 3 2009

The concept of stealing blinds and antes is certainly nothing new to the game of poker: the ‘position raise’ concept is way older than the famous line by John Malkovich in ‘Rounders’ that so many like to quote in that old Russian accent.

Often, though, and especially in short handed and sit n go casino tournaments, stealing blinds is not only important, it’s nearly vital if you are going to win regularly, especially during periods when the cards aren’t quite coming hot.

The basic concept of stealing blinds is that when acting from late position, the odds that another online poker player has a strong hand (one worth calling a raise with) gets less and less likely. Thus, if you’re on the button, or even one or two seats off the button, it can be profitable to put in a raise and try to pick up the chips uncontested. If you get reraised when holding a minor hand, you can simply foldand as your frequency of raising increases, the action you will get when you do have a hand increase too! If you do get called, odds are often that the player will often miss the flop and check it over to you, the raiser, at which point you can bet and often pick up not only the blinds and antes, but the extra bet they called trying to catch up to the hand that you don’t even have. You never really have to put yourself at risk because you’re only committing your chips to the pot when the other players exhibit weakness.

Lanterns of an Afternoon Saturday, May 23 2009

It is the perfect time of year for wish lanterns, make no mistake. The sun is shining and spirits are generally pretty high, so the wish lantern can really come into play in this sort of atmosphere. It doesn’t matter what time of day you decide to launch your lantern. The effect is more striking at night as lanterns look beautiful against a dark night’s sky. But, having said this, the experience is equally as pleasurable in the middle of the day with the sun glaring onto the delicate rice paper of the lantern body. It would be very sociable to take a group of friends and a picnic hamper along to a park. With a handful of sky lanterns in tow, there’s an opportunity to make a whole day of it. My sister once threw a picnic (hosted not literally hurled the food and cutlery) in Waterlow park, and want a very civilised affair it was! She made homemade cupcakes and iced them all individually and even made jugs of Pimms and lemonade for everyone to enjoy. What a very British activity. The only thing missing was a few sky lanterns which would have been the icing on the cake of what was a very lovely afternoon.

Deceit against Tight Poker Players Thursday, Mar 19 2009

In poker, deceit is an essential tool. You don’t want to over use it, but must occasionally rely on deceit to win pots at the casino. Your deceptive tactics should be based on the type of pokerplayers you are up against. Tight players are susceptible to completely different tricks than loose players.

Check raising won’t work most times because tight passive players like to check too, even when they have good cards. Slow playing good cards is risky with these players because they’ll stay to the river when they have invested little in the pot.

Tight passive players are the easiest to bluff. They will frequently call without re-raising. Just be aware that tight passive players often play weakly even with good cards. They often will check even when holding good cards, so your bluff could get beaten.

Tight aggressive players are tough opponents. With these types, it is critical to mix up your playing style so they can’t get a read on your hand. Limit outright bluff attempts, but do engage in occasional semi-bluffs where you can improve. You can’t play marginal or speculative hands against these types since they only stay in the action when they have good hands. Your check raise could get re-raised. They will most likely protect their blinds against any stealing attempts.

By understanding poker types and their psychology, you can selectively practice deceptive techniques suited to different player styles.

Super Turbo Poker Sit and Go’s Tuesday, Nov 25 2008

On some online poker sites they have these ridiculous tournaments that are hard not to take advantage of. They start you with only 300 in chips, and the blinds increase every 3 minutes. It basically cuts to the chase of a sit and go. You are forced to play aggressively from a short stack and make profitable all-ins. But what’s key, is that everybody is a short stack. Because of this, your raises are more meaningful. By making any raise preflop, aside from perhaps a min-raise, you are forcing your opponent to make a decision for all of his online poker chips. If he calls and misses, you’re betting 100% of the time, so he loses. Your opponent has to decide if any hand he calls with will be worth it to play until the end. This brings down the value of suited connectors and speculative hands, and jumps the value of any ace and perhaps any king high hand. A massive hand like AA or KK is basically a paycheck. You can limp with these and someone will probably move all in behind you with a hand you have dominated (AK, AQ, AJ, A,10, KQ).

If nothing else, the blinds fold preflop, you win, adding 10-15% to your stack size, which is super important. If you can chip up to 400 or 500 chips, or perhaps double early by taking out a player, you can coast and wait for premiums. Also, don’t forget that when you have a double stack, you can always put the pressure on short stacks that follow you. If everyone else left to call behind you only has 200 or fewer chips, you can bet their stack size with a huge range of hands and they will; often fold, due to the gap concept (that you need a stronger hand to call a bet than to make one). And if they call, you’re not risking too much of your stack, and your cards are often live.

Of course you can push early into a monster and you’re out, but a smart aggressive poker player can walk away with a lot of money in a very short period of time by multitabling these events.
