Job Hunting Using the Internet to Succeed Thursday, Dec 24 2009

A modern job search campaign is by nature very intricate. While the internet has offered a variety of new channels, it also creates increased competition for choice jobs and potential challenges for job hunters.

Job hunting needs to be thought of as a personalized, highly directed marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network of colleagues is your source for job information.

So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we just posted a job on a popular job board and got more than 650 applications in a week. For one position. That’s increased competition for job openings.

Had a strong person called us before we posted the ad, they could have secured the job prior to having all that competition. How? By finding an employee at our office who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew about of the job for at least 12 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful how you submit your application as well. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily eliminated with a fast triage process. How? The same way any HR professional would. By rejecting resumes where the objective didn’t match our job. By eliminating candidates whose cover letters gave us causes not to hire them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating prospects whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by rejecting candidates who didn’t trouble to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the great news is that job sites give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of jobs. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still try, if you have a well thought out resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another potential problem to be aware of is how quickly and easily you can be looked up on the web. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some pictures and comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing crazy, but enough to tilt our thoughts about who to employ.

AA-Careers provides a broad set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Internet Connection of Habitual Offenders will be Discontinued, Says Lord Mandelson Thursday, Nov 19 2009

Lord Mandelson recently reaffirmed the government’s stand on illegal downloading and stated that the Government has planned to implement strict measures to combat this menace.

The proposed strict measures include capping the broadband access and lowering the speed of access initially, failing which the government plans to disconnect the services of the offender permanently.

The Department of Business, Skills and Innovation has stated that the government is proposing to implement its new legislation by April 2010, which will contain slightly lenient measures. However, if offenders are not deterred by these measures then it will be followed by a stricter law mooting disconnection of services, which will be implemented by spring 2011. The government is planning to rope in Ofcom to monitor and report the statistics of such illegal file sharing.

TalkTalk, a leading ISP, in a recent interview to the BBC, has however opposed this move categorically and has called it unprincipled and impractical. Further, a TalkTalk representative added that if the government forces such measures on ISPs, the latter might challenge it in court.

Lord Mandelson, defending the new law, stated that disconnection will be the ultimate mode of punishment for illegal downloading. Initially, all offenders will be given two warnings, but if they fail to stop their activities, then the government will punish them by discontinuing their internet services.

Both the internet service provider as well as the content provider will share the cost of implementation of such measures.

There are a number of points to consider when choosing the best broadband for you. If you choose your broadband provider through Broadband Genie, you

Sweden on Path to Switch from Fixed Lines to Mobile Broadband Tuesday, Aug 11 2009

In the wake of explosive growth in usage of mobile broadband across the country, there are chances that it will replace fixed line broadband in Sweden. The possibility is also supported by a report of Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, which states that the total traffic of data on Swedish networks increases by almost four times over the last one year.

Sweden is listed among the topmost countries in terms of mobile broadband usage, and one of the reasons for this is the competitive prices offered by mobile broadband providers. However, this can be problematic for the overall industry, as mobile broadband providers tend to take up market share from the fixed lines by giving up their profits and running their businesses in losses at times.

The market has seen an unprecedented boom in the uptake of mobile broadband services as data consumption has increased by as much as 100% in 2008 itself. This has resulted in the data usage of mobile broadband coming at par with that of fixed lines, and has reconfirmed the potential of the technology to replace fixed lines, according to a senior partner at a leading telecoms consultancy in Helsinki called Rewheel.

There is no doubt that the future of mobile broadband looks all positive in the wake of increase in usage and data consumption over the past few years, with more and more consumers shifting towards it. However, experts suggest that there is a need for re-pricing of the service before it is made accessible to a larger user base.

VOIP Telephony - The Benefits and Limitations Monday, Jun 8 2009

Previously we explored the history and technology that gave
rise to VOIP Telephone service (*see footnotes). Today we will examine
some of the benefits and also the drawbacks of this new opportunity.

In previous articles we discovered that traditional “Landline” type
phone service is set up much like a “Toll Highway”. Billing starts
when the “Circuit” is opened, and continues until it is closed.
Just like travelling down a Tollway, the longer you stay on, and the
farther you travel, the more “Toll Booths” you pass through. These
toll booths are the phone company’s switches, and you get charged
for every one that you pass through.

In contrast, VOIP phones use “Packet” switching. As the broadband
Internet connection is always open, digitized voice signals are
sent to the receiver in discrete packets. The result is that no
“dead air” exists on the line, as no traffic is sent when there is
a lull or pause in the conversation. This allows several two-way
conversations to use the same “bandwidth”, or space that previously
was tied up by ONE call.

This has resulted in great economy for VOIP providers who in turn
pass along the savings to the end user. Most top VOIP plans run
around 30 dollars a month, and the best include International calls
to many countries worldwide within that base fee along with a host
of features like Voice Mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Three-way
Calling, Online Access, Etc.

While most major traditional carriers have an “all inclusive” plan,
none that I know of include International calling, and most of their
“basic” plans are double the cost of VOIP. In my experience, the most
coveted features are also charged extra for. Add in the taxes and fees,
and all of a sudden you’re talking REAL money!

The other great benefit of VOIP is the ability to take your device
anywhere and make calls just like you were at home. The best services
are fully find-me, follow-me capable. This means that wherever you
happen to be, your phone number will find you and ring at THAT location.
I use mine with a Laptop, a cheap cigarette lighter a/c converter,
a wireless card, and an old “princess” phone in my truck parked outside
of hotspots all the time. That’s huge. You can have your office in
whatever hotel or airport or Starbucks you happen to be in at the moment.

Having covered most of the benefits of VOIP, let’s examine some of
the drawbacks. The major one is spotty 911 service availability. As
the device is portable, any call to 911 will result in emergency
crews being sent to the device’s address of record, which is set up
when you activate the VOIP device and service. Obviously this doesn’t
do you much good if you are in a hotel in Montana but live in Ohio.

One way around this is to change your address with your provider when
you travel, and then change it back when you return home. Of course,
this only works with domestic addresses, and you must remember to do it.

A better way is to ignore the issue entirely, and keep a very basic,
cheap, no frills service plan with your local phone provider. This will
still be cheaper by far than a full blown plan. Also, you avoid the other
main issue with VOIP- Power Outages. If power goes out, or you lose your
Internet Connection, you lose your phone service. Of course, you run
that risk with today’s cordless phones too, so it’s always a good idea
to have an old hardwired phone around the house, or at least a cell
phone available.

Broadband Telephony Price War Monday, Jun 8 2009

The Internet gives you an easy access to information and services and it is becoming the wave of the future. With the hype of broadband enabled services, competition is increasing and prices are dropping. Broadband has opened a whole new world of creative opportunities for individuals and businesses alike and has made ordinary Internet browsing extraordinary. With amazing speeds and reliable connections, all Internet activities are best performed with a dependable speedy connection. Gone are the days of expensive phone calls and slow speed Internet access. Today, broadband allows you to access Internet at lightening speed from home or anywhere at the most affordable prices.

Looking from the consumer’s point of view, it’s good news for them, as they would obviously like to pay less for a service. People are becoming aware of broadband services available for low prices and so they are switching from dial-up to broadband. Apart from the prices, a number of factors like faster downloads, the introduction of Voice of Internet Protocol (VoIP), offering customers free, or extraordinarily cheap, telephone calls; and the enormous success of online computer games has led to the switch over from dialup to broadband.

It is expected that the prices will continue to fall and customers will continue to get more for their money. Customers are always looking for the providers offering less price and more quality and are willing to switch their existing service provider if he doesn’t fit their needs. But the biggest problem for the customers wanting to take advantage of lower rates by switching their provider is paying a service charge to the provider for installing a modem.

With the competition among Internet providers becoming more severe every day, consumers are getting great choice. A number of providers are willing to cut down their prices to match their competitor and get business. Changes and technological advances in the world of broadband are happening all the time. The price wars have finally begun with the competition soaring among high-speed Internet providers. Cable companies are also competing with the broadband providers in a bid to gain their position in the market by slashing prices and increasing access speeds.

What is VoIP Technology? Friday, Jun 5 2009

You may have heard the term Voip used a lot in the media, but are not sure what everyone is so excited about. Here you will find the answers to your most sought after Voip technology questions.

What is Voip technology?

Technically, VOIP is Voice Over Internet Protocol, or voices traveling over internet lines and wires like other information would. So, what does this mean to you? A lot. Even if you don’t have a clue what Voip technology is, you may still be utilizing it everyday if you have a digital phone line or if you use a microphone hooked into your computer to speck to others while you are connected to the internet.

What is Voip technology going to do for me?

Digital phone and services like it keep costs down for the company, which is passed on to the
consumer. It is usually much cheaper then a traditional land phone line, especially if you want extras such as caller ID and call forwarding.

What is Voip technology going to lack?

As great as Voip technology may be, there are some drawbacks that one using it for your phone service should realize. First, most digital phone companies do not provide access to emergency assistance numbers, such as 911 for those in the US. This may leave your household vulnerable if you use digital phone. Some consumers overcome this by keeping a basic plan with there traditional phone company provider or have a cell phone available in case of an emergency.

Another drawback to Voip technology in the form of digital phone is that if your power goes out, so does your phone. When you have a service through a traditional phone company, you can still access your line even during power outages as long as you do not need a second power source to run it (ex: cordless phones need a second power source to run, so when the power goes out so does your phone). This is not so with digital phone. However, once again having a basic plan with your traditional phone company or having a cell phone on hand may remedy this problem.

What is Voip technology overall?

Voip technology can be an asset to anyone. It keeps the cost of having a land phone line cheap while still allowing us to communicate verbally without having to rely solely on cell phones. The next time you are taking a look at your high-price phone bill from your phone company, take another look at digital phone and Voip technology in general. You may rack up savings that you never even knew existed.

Virgin Media Finds Loopholes in BT’s 3 Month Free Offer Wednesday, May 20 2009

Virgin Media and BT, two fierce competitors in the broadband service industry, are at loggerheads again.

Virgin Media has decided to mount a scathing attack on BT’s offer of “three months’ free surfing” that has just seen a promotional release. All the advertised benefits are being ripped apart, and possible drawbacks are being pointed out in a retaliatory Virgin campaign.

BT’s promotional plan currently offers customers three months of free Internet usage at download speeds of up to 8Mbps. This does not convince Virgin Media though. As a company spokesperson says, free broadband service for three months may sound great, but BT customers should look closely at what they really get (click here for a broadband comparison).

According to Virgin, the speed of “up to” 8MBps gets slower and slower with an increase in the distance from the nearest telephone exchange. Downloads have a relatively low limit of 10GB and an 18-month contract robs customers of flexibility.

Not only that, BT has also been said to block streaming speeds. As an example, Virgin Media cites how people opting for BT Option 1 are not able to watch BBC iPlayer’s high definition programs on their computers.

Predictably, Virgin Media’s solution to the above problems lies in its own package, which comes for

2.6 GHz Spectrum on Track for Year End Auction Tuesday, Apr 7 2009

Adding another spin to the spectrum reallocation tale is the news that T-Mobile has dropped out of its year long legal battle with Ofcom without specifying any reason for the same.

This is good news for Ofcom, which has always stuck to its stance that the reallocation of the 900 MHz frequencies and the 2.6 GHz chunk are in no way related. T-Mobile’s ouster leaves O2 alone to battle it out with Ofcom, which is planning to hold the auction of the 2.6 GHz frequency range later this year. Last year when Ofcom had made public its decision of auctioning it off, the issue had become the subject of heated debate.

The 2.6 GHz chunk is important because it has been recognised as the main spectrum for 4G technologies like LTE. However, industry insiders are unable to place an estimate on the value of the 2.6 GHz range, and feel that it would be possible to do so only once Ofcom arrives at a decision about the other parts of the spectrum. They seem to be particularly interested in 900MHz since that frequency range is where 3G services operate (for more mobile broadband news, click here)

The auction was stalled in May last year after T-Mobile and O2 filed a lawsuit against Ofcom demanding that it finalise its decision concerning the spectrum allocation in general and the 900 MHz chunk in particular. Ofcom can now heave a sigh of relief with T-Mobile out of the fray. The legal issues also prevented anyone from deploying LTE’s rival technology WiMax on the 2.6 GHz spectrum. This went down quite well with those mobile providers who are LTE supporters.
