Medical Physics Periodicals Thursday, Feb 18 2010

There have been instances where the query was posed, among medical physics consulting providers, whether it would be valuable to provide regular information to offer insight into the industry A newsletter or periodical of this sort could provide great benefit for partners, customers, and other readers. There are various reasons why this is the case and this will be developed throughout this paper.
If we need to justify why to do this type of activity - At the very core of the matter the function of a regular medical physics publication is to add value. Adding value is a subject that is very close to us as a consumer when we consider who to buy from, and as a business owner both when we consider what services to provide and who we trust to serve us.I like what Harry Kafka wrote of value on his competitive branding website. “The concept of “value” is somewhat elusive for most of us, which becomes evident if you ask people to DEFINE its meaning.” he then says that “To take this into the realm of customer-experience, we could state that those concepts of usefulness and importance which THEY have attributed to our products / services / the area in which these are used is what constitutes VALUE for them.”
A quarterly newsletter developed for the benefit of those who provide or are in need of physics consulting can touch many topics. A brief list of possibilities includes the following:
  • Industry changes
  • Accreditation info
  • Technical points
  • Credentialing insight
  • Radiation safety information
Simultaneously the reader can be taught more about developments specific to their area, changes in staffing, recently rolled out service offerings, and tips on how to get as much value as possible from diagnostic physics offerings - It doesn’t matter how you are oriented to the periodical, the function remains to do more for you, to meet your needs. Saving you time and making things better for you will in the end make the growth of this regular publication worthwhile. We’re using more tools such as these to enhance your physics support.

JWH018 Wednesday, Feb 10 2010

JWH018 is an a member of a group of drugs used to relieve pain which acts in various ways on the peripheral nervous system. It is a member of the amino alkyl indole syndicate. JWH-018 can act as a cannabinoid agonist towards the CB1 and CB2 receptors. It has been found to produce effects similar to that of Tetrahydrocannabinol with a lengthier duration of action.

The abbreviation JWH stands for John W. Huffman who is considered the inventor of JWH-018. It is a chemical first synthesized in 1995 in a university science lab in the United States. John W. Huffman earned his BS from Northwestern University and his AM and PhD from Harvard. He began his academic career at Georgia Institute of Technology (1957-60) and joined Clemson as assistant professor in 1960. He was an NSF Predoctoral Fellow at Harvard and received an NIH Career Development Award (1965-70). He was a visiting professor at Colorado State University (1982). The principal emphasis in Dr. Huffman’s research group is on the synthesis of analogues and metabolites of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol THC), the principal active component of marijuana. Huffman has published dozen of articles about cannabinoids.

Although toxicity reports are not completed by an independant lab, scientist say they are prepared to trust that it is not toxic.
Further information about JWH-018 toxicity reports can be found on Mindfully

There Are Many Different Forms in Which Alternative Energy Is Available Wednesday, Jan 6 2010

Solar power is driven by photovoltaic cells, and these are progressively getting less expensive and more advanced. Solar energy power can be used for electricity, heating, and making hot water. Solar energy produces no pollution, as its input comes completely from the sun’s rays. However, much more work still needs to be done in order for us to economically harness the sun’s energy. For the time being, the resource is a little too conditionalstorage batteries are needed to be used as backups in the evenings and on inclement days. Wind energy has become the most-invested-in (by private investors and governments together) alternative energy source for the time being. The great arrays of triple-bladed windmills are being placed all over as “wind farms”, to capture the motion of the wind and use its kinetic energy for conversion to mechanical or electrical energy. Of course, there is nothing new about the concept of a windmill for harnessing energy. Modern wind turbines are simply are more advanced variations on the old theme. Of course, the drawback to wind energy is…what do you do when there is a calm, still day? Needless to say, during these times the electric company kicks in for powering your home or office. Wind energy is not altogether independent. Hydroelectric energy is available as a source of alternative energy, and it can generate a substantial amount of power. Simply put, hydroelectric energy uses the motion of waterits flow in response to gravity, which means downhillto turn turbines which then generate electrical energy. Needless to say, water is ubiquitous; finding sources for driving hydroelectric turbines is, therefore, not much of a problem. However, hydroelectricity as a source of alternative energy can be complicated and expensive to produce. Dams are often built in order to be able to control the flow of the water sufficiently to generate the needed power. Building a dam to store and control water’s potential and kinetic energy takes quite a lot of work, and operating one is complex as well, and conservationists grow concerned that it. Of course, a dam is not always needed if one is not trying to supply the electrical needs of a city or other very densely populated area. There are small run-of-river hydroelectric converters which are good for supplying neighborhoods or an individual office or home. Probably the most underrated and under-appreciated form of alternative energy is geothermal energy, which is simply the naturally-occurring energy produced by the heating of artesian waters that are just below the earth’s crust. This heat is transferred into the water from the earth’s inner molten core. The water is drawn up by various different methodsthere are ‘dry steam” power plants, “flash” power plants, and “binary” power plants for harnessing geothermal energy. The purpose of drawing up the hot water is for the gathering of the steam. The Geysers, approximately 100 miles north of San Francisco, is probably the best-known of all geothermal power fields; it’s an example of a dry stream plant.

Wind and Solar Energy Friday, Oct 30 2009

By combining the two systems in your home with power saving habits, you can actually produce excess power, and then sell it back to your utility company for profit. Home solar panels are becoming more and more popular these days. However, this also means that the price of having them installed by a professional technician is still very high, despite the cost of the raw materials required going down at quite a steady rate. You will be looking at a cost of at least $3000 to have solar panels installed in your home (wind turbines will also set you back a similar amount) It is possible to build your own fully functional system, from scratch and install it, for under $250.Knowing how to take advantage of this will make your small wind turbine project successful. Dealing with these issues is the prime concern when designing your home renewable energy system using small wind turbines. Although the outdoor section of the system is the most visible, the real magic happens inside. Components such as charge controllers, batteries and inverters make it possible for you to use the energy generated by your small wind turbine at some point in the future. This means that your turbine can be generating power in the middle of the night that you could use the next day. Expect to do some oiling and follow the manufacturers directions and you will have a more efficient running machine. Space is a concern as well. If you haven done so already (this is one of the first things I did), take a walk outside and think about 1) where youe going to build this thing, ie- work space, and 2) where youe going to set it up. Depending on how much electricity youe looking to generate, your turbine blades can get up to 8 feet in diameter.

About an Endangered Bird Saturday, Jul 25 2009

The numbers of Gouldian Finches have weakened rather rapidly during the 20th century. Their habitat has been reduced or altered. Early research indicated a parasite called air sac mite, was responsible for the decline of the Gouldian. However, this idea has been ruled out. In general, The Gouldian Finches are susceptible to diseases and viral infections. Their beautiful colors mean that they are easily eaten by predators. Fires are listed as the number 1 threat to the natural populations. The total number of Gouldian finches altogether is not low, however, because they are among the most popular pet birds, and are bred in captivity for the pet trade.

Actions have been taken and are underway to implement a recovery plan to recover and conserve its natural habitats, such as building protective fencing to prevent damage by cattle. Attempts at reintroduction have so far proved unsuccessful; it was also suggested to develop management guidelines for land-holders about appropriate land management, promoting the recovery program and Gouldian Finche conservation.

Although often bred in a colony in captivity, in the wild The Gouldian is not a settlement bird. However, out of the mating season it assembles in flocks often a mixed flock consisting of Longtail Finches, Masked Finches and Gouldians. This is probably a defence against predation. Flocks used to consist of up to 1000″2000 individuals. During the breeding season they are usually found on rough scree slopes where vegetation is sparse. In the dry season they are more nomadic and will move to wherever there is food and water.

Diagnosis Cancer of the Mesothelium Means Qualified Tests Saturday, Jun 27 2009

Mesotheliomawill show a few primary symptoms. Pleural mesotheliomas main symptom is a lack of breath due to pleural effusion ” the accumulation of fluid in the pleura, or membrane, surrounding the lung. The next most common symptomis chest pain because the chest wall is being attacked by the tumor. Symptoms may also include fatigue, loss of weight and night sweats

The most common sign of patients with abdomen mesothelioma, which originates in the abdomen, is abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup in the abdomen (a condition called ascites), pain in the abdomen, and blockage of the bowel.

It is important to note that many of these symptoms may be caused by other conditions. But if you have experienced any of these symptoms and have had asbestos exposure, you should see your doctor.

Mesothelioma cancer is difficult to diagnose, because many symptoms are also associated with less serious conditions. Symptoms typical for mesothelioma:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or lower back pain associated with an excess of fluid in the pleura
  • Burning up
  • Upset stomach
  • Raspy voice
  • Having trouble swallowing
  • Spitting up blood

Self-diagnosis should never be attempted. One suffering from any of the above symptoms should see a doctor and remain calm. Performing a biopsy is the standard way to confirm the condition. A pathologist takes a small tissue sample from the suspected region and examines it to return a highly accurate diagnosis. Biopsies are typically pain-free.

A CT scan (Computer Tomography is an option if you dont want a biopsy. A CT scan is basically an X-ray procedure where cross-sectional images are taken as a scanner rotates around the body. Sometimes, the patient ingests a dye that helps define the picture. CT scans have the advantage of being non-invasive and easier, and they are recognized as being effective in diagnosis. Opinion is divided as to whether the scan is more or less cost-effective than a biopsy. If there are irregularities, a biopsy may also be needed to know if the abnormality is a tumor, and if so, whether it is malignant or benign. Pleural mesothelioma can also be diagnosed by looking for cancer cells in a sample of fluid from the pleura.

Any of these methods may also be used to screen for mesothelioma. Patients who may think they are at risk but do not display any symptoms are typically screened, to catch the cancer early or to make sure the patient is not otherwise in danger. Patients should be screened for mesothelioma if they have a history of asbestos exposure.

Europe’s Winter Areas Will Battle because of the Increased Cost of Energy Friday, Feb 13 2009

It has been anticipated that the European top 655 snowboarding domains could be cut back to 400 by 2046. Eligio Lucchese stated that the holiday industry will hurt prior to then, not because of a lack of snow merely from a worldwide reduction in buying might connected to the rising cost of crude oil. So what about rising temperatures? Experts have established that a doubling up of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere will increase floor temperatures by 4 - 7 Celsius. Notwithstanding there remain several open doubts. The pace of climate change and the aftermath on the mountains climate. A couple degrees warming up in the last 100 yrs hasn’t been seen over the last million years. Even during the end of the glacial period 19000 years ago the warming up of 4 degrees was over a period of five to 10 thousand yrs. Before that Val Thorens and Les Houches were covered with ice and Araches-la-Frasse was as cold as the Arctic.

So what does the future hold for low mountain snowboarding towns domains? Energy squeezes will commence to be felt by 2013 - 19, leading to increased costs for Chamonix chalets, airport taxi firms and ski lift firms alike. Half of the economy hinges upon crude oil and the French buys 90 %. The current bill amounts to four percent of GDP. Should the cost of crude oil steps up as predicted it’ll comprise 41 % of GDP, one can guess the economic downturn. The Alps will witness the price of agricultural commodities going up, flora species will adapt because of a adjustment in rain. Locals will move out of the locale due to the summertime warmth. Its hydro-power will be a invaluable source of power but it isn’t certain whether it will be an advantage since there will be less snow, additional water in the winters and fewer in the spring.
