In the wake of explosive growth in usage of mobile broadband across the country, there are chances that it will replace fixed line broadband in Sweden. The possibility is also supported by a report of Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, which states that the total traffic of data on Swedish networks increases by almost four times over the last one year.

Sweden is listed among the topmost countries in terms of mobile broadband usage, and one of the reasons for this is the competitive prices offered by mobile broadband providers. However, this can be problematic for the overall industry, as mobile broadband providers tend to take up market share from the fixed lines by giving up their profits and running their businesses in losses at times.

The market has seen an unprecedented boom in the uptake of mobile broadband services as data consumption has increased by as much as 100% in 2008 itself. This has resulted in the data usage of mobile broadband coming at par with that of fixed lines, and has reconfirmed the potential of the technology to replace fixed lines, according to a senior partner at a leading telecoms consultancy in Helsinki called Rewheel.

There is no doubt that the future of mobile broadband looks all positive in the wake of increase in usage and data consumption over the past few years, with more and more consumers shifting towards it. However, experts suggest that there is a need for re-pricing of the service before it is made accessible to a larger user base.
