VOIP Friday, Sep 26 2008

This article contains the excellent information about the Voice Over IP Protocol.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is the wave of the future in terms of telephone communication via the Internet. VoIP has several advantages over circuit-switched technology used by local phone companies. Circuit-switched technology uses a ‘permanent’ connection between the caller and callee, which requires a huge amount of bandwidth for each call.

This type of technology can only carry certain types of calls, such as telephone to telephone. Also, the hardware circuit-switched networks need to run effectively are extremely expensive, mostly because voice and data services must be supported on different wires. Therefore, each service needs separate hardware to accommodate the voice and data types of traffic. Needless to say, your local phone company then passes the costs of building and maintaining a circuit-switched network to the you, the consumer. Unforturnately, this equals higher rates for your telephone services.

VoIP - How Does it Work?

VoIP technology is when phone calls travel networks using Internet Protocol (IP). What this means is that the calls are passed through the Internet or privately managed data networks that are using IP to send the calls from one location to the other. So whether the call is passed through the Internet or data networks, the voice stream is broken down into packets, compressed, and sent toward their final destination by several different routes.

This is where circuit-switch technology and IP technology differ, in that circuit-switched technology uses a ‘permanent’ connection for the entire phone call. Once the call reaches the callee, the voice stream packets are reassembled, decompressed, and switched back into a voice stream by several hardware and software elements, depending on the call’s final destination. The type of software and hardware needed to start and end a phone call is determined by where the call originated, such as a PC, phone, or an Integrated Access Device (IAD) and whether the call is going to be completed on a PC, telephone, or IAD.

ADVANTAGES OF VoIP

The following is a list of the numerous advantages for using VoIP:

Voice and data can be sent over the same lines.

8 time the number of phone calls can be placed on those lines than in the circuit-switched environment.

Quality of sound is excellent.

Lower operating costs due to reduced hardware requirements and a more efficient network infrastructure.

Lower cost structures enable lower rates than the traditional telephone companies.

Use of different devices to talk to one another.

Two Poems with Triggers [and a commentary] Tuesday, Sep 23 2008

So Many Einstein’s

The morning mist, insists there is a God.
The earth remains faithful to its orbit.
The comet cries out to a hundred planets.

The sun ascends over the horizon.
From eight to eighty, so many Einstein’s.
The evening dust descends over tired wings.

To those who write music, paint poetry,
I say: our goal is to make whole the sum;
Wherein, reason can dwell among everyone.

Dennis, some of that figurative verse is great;
Perhaps as good as anyone can make.

Just a Drop

In every drop of blood, rages war
For existence
Even in-sects !…

Note: these two poems of Dennis Siluk’s reach out towards the world at large, with high spirits, wit and intensity; or so I do believe. What more can I say, except read them for yourself over a few times, see how they fit, or if you can absorb them. I like to read poetry at least three times; once quick to just get the words in my head; then the second time to kind of see how it is put together and check out the substance; and third for pure enjoyment, but sometimes I have to go back and see if I saw what I think I saw; like a painting, poetry can strike each person differently. It can trigger emotions like a movie. Anyhow, I read it a few more times especially if I see lots of images. Rosa Pealoza

What’s A Prisoner to Do? Friday, Sep 19 2008

What’s a prisoner to do when justice fails
and the innocent is escorted off to jail?

What’s a prisoner to do once stigmatized,
caged and abandoned and ostracized?

What’s a prisoner to do there’s no one to trust;
the system fails and the outcome unjust?

What’s a prisoner to do when family decide
the punishment is warranted and justified?

What’s a prisoner to do while confined in a cell;
the perpetrator’s free and faring quite well?

What’s a prisoner to do once his reputation is dead
and his life has been ruined because of what someone said?

What’s a prisoner to do when he’s not believed,
though he’s telling the truth, he’s thought to deceive?

What’s a prisoner to do as he sits all alone,
no one seems to care; former friends all gone?

What’s a prisoner to do sitting lost and idle
and most of one’s thoughts become suicidal?

What’s a prisoner to do when freedom’s taken away
and the will to live diminishes each day?

What’s a prisoner to do when hedged in by strife;
with no escape possible; no chance for a new life?

What’s a prisoner to do when he can no longer see
the beauty of the sky or the waves of the sea?

What’s a prisoner to do when the sun he can’t feel,
nor the breeze of spring because his fate is sealed?

What’s a prisoner to do when doomed to despair
but still praying to escape the electric chair?

Tell me, what’s a prisoner to do?

Mechanical Poetry; Part Two Thursday, Sep 18 2008

What do you do when you want to write poetry? I hope your answer is “I start writing.” Even writing a bad poem is better than waiting for the “right words.” You can always throw it away, and the process has begun. You’ll start to find the words sooner than if you had just waited. Here are some more ways to get started.

Sing A Poem

Try a little experiment - alone in the basement if you must. Describe something, then describe it again, singing instead of talking. You’ll notice the words you use change. Your sentences will generally be more rythmic. It is also easier to rhyme when you are singing.

Singing comes from the right side of the brain. This is the side that handles pattern-recognition. When you sing, you access this part of your brain, and you’ll get ideas or patterns of words that are difficult for your analytical left-brain to create. Try it.

Start With Poetic Materials

You can create poetry by listing words most likely to result in decent poems. Look for emotional content, for example. “Love” and “worship” have more poetic potential than “like,” right? Scan a book, pick out powerful words, and write them down. You may want to write words that rhyme with them alonside. Then start using them.

Say something dramatic, like “I sing of death,” or “Your eyes called out.” Try to let it come from somewhere deep inside you. Then start explaining what it might mean. This will almost certainly give you material for a poem.

Play with short verses, long verses, rhyming and non-rhyming poems. Try haiku. Try writing down your thoughts as fast as you can, without stopping. Don’t worry about quality at this point. You just need to get that creative mind working. Then, when you find gems in all the dirt, you can start polishing them.

Steve Gillman has been playing with poetry for thirty years. He and his wife Ana created the game “Deal-A-Poem,” which can be accessed for free at: http://www.dealapoem.com

Return of the Furniture Wednesday, Sep 17 2008

Pffft. The oak furniture was in terrible condition, I’d never seen such a sorry sight in all my life; I just couldn’t get over it. And then I did. That was a long time ago, things were different back then. I was but a young man in an old world, I had yet to find my place. These days I’m what they call a “gun for hire”. I made my living killing people, to put it bluntly. My art was death and I was a master painter, I was the monster under the bed, I was the dark in the basement, I was the cliché in the faux noir story. My final gunfight was the stuff of legends; people are still talking about it. But that’s another story. The story of how I fell into a vat of chemical waste outside the Jefferson factory (where they made Jeffersons, of course) and grew a third pair of hands is a story to inspire great men to do great things. But alas, that too, is a tale for another time.That too, is a tale for another time.Is a tale for another time.A tale for another time.Another time. Time time time time time.

An Introduction to Income Drawdown Pensions - Independent Financial Information Wednesday, Sep 10 2008

When you get to those final working years you do not have to take out your retirement fund at that moment. As an option, you can decide to postpone acquiring an income until the prime old age of seventy-five & if you do so you could find you will get a better offer. It’s branded as income draw down.

When you are aged between fifty and seventy-five you are permitted to delay the tenure of your pension allowance from an insurance company. Instead, you can remove up to 120% of the retirement fund that could have been originally bought using Government Actuary rates, leaving the remaining cash protected until you want it. On your side, all you have to do is to guarantee that you obtain a pension annuity by the time you’re seventy five.

Nevertheless, what would result if you wanted to take the income drawdown option, and then passed on? If this did turn out then your current wife/husband or those responsible would then get 3 decisions: either to accept a lump amount, following tax at thirty five percent, or then again maintain with income taking out, or buying an annuity with the financial resources. Your surviving companion has until they get to sixty years old to put off the possession of an annuity, although no benefits are payable in the period-in-between.

Why opt for income drawdown? Well chiefly because it could result in you earning a superior wage from your current pension by doing so. Secondly, you can select precisely when you buy the annuity, hence if you retire at a period when the annuity rates are considerable low, waiting may be a smarter decision. If the remaining stocks mature as forecasted, then together with the reality that annuity rates climb with age, you might ultimately be able to procure a far superior pension than you may have obtained earlier.

Besides, it also means that when you leave this life your next of kin or dependants are looked after financially, as they are correctly entitled to the residual stocks, as discussed before.

There are dangers subsequently though. If asset performance on the remaining funds is below par, then the level of income payable might reduce. And it is vital to remember that there is no assurance that the pension purchased will in the end be more than the whole figure that could have been bought at the outset. Sudden Power Failure Tuesday, Sep 9 2008

Did you have any power problems at your house? Has your refrigerator stopped working during the night? Do you have qualms about food that was in the freezer?

Relax ,in that case you can use some easy tips for handling food safely.

If the food has warmed at all, whether thawed completely or just to room temperature, discard it immediately. Discard it if it has been out of the refrigerator for over two hours.

Largely thawed food that is still cold should be cooked immediately. As long as you have cooked your meal it’s fine to eat and stick it in the fridge to eat later.

If the food still has ice crystals on it, you may refreeze it. You can put it in a cooler with some dry ice if no freezer is available. The food will need to be cooked, because it won’t last as long as with a normal freezer.

If you notice any food with even a little freezer burn, you need to throw it away.

It’s not possible to prevent the occurrence of unexpected power interruptions due to weather or accidents, but it is possible to react properly in such cases.
When your freezer or refrigerator are getting on in years, the best recommendation you’ll get is to purchase a high quality new one. Definitely consider a large refrigerator/freezer as used in America is if there is space for it. This can make a dramatic change to any kitchen. This site contains a wide range of American made fridges and freezers, aiming to serve you better.
